Philips CD204

Philips CD204 this is a damn serious CD player ladies and gentlemen. Compared side by side it is identical in every detail to a CD104 & CD304. Same mechanism, same chips, same schematics what else more would you expect?. If you have one collecting dust somewhere - Use it. If you can buy one - DO IT now.

If you don’t know-GOOGLE it! In this whole player absolutely NOTHING IS MADE OF CHEAP PLASTIC. Not even tray, tracking mechanism, or chassis! The strongest point of Philips CD204 is in its optic mechanism, the built is brutally insane, insulting to every modern players,it is probably one the best Philips mechanism ever made, all cast metal, brushless motor, magnetic field swingarm - everything is top notch during 80s era. I rated the CDM1 more than any of CDM1 MK2, and more than CDM2,later VAM1250 is damn fragile as a shit! 2nd best is CDM4 variant in my opinion which Naim widely use them in their CDS/I series! The CD204 or CDx04 series designed with an intension to stay with you forever, everything is outclassing the technologies at that time which is also never been beaten by modern popular streaming technology .For serious audiophile folks, with a proper CDP is still the easiest way to enjoy music with analogue alike sounding.

The DC regulators all sit on the gigantic heatsink. Probably the biggest heatsink on any CD player ever done as the TDA chipset demands more current than usual DACs as if you feel this CDP is biased into class A mode, no worry it runs rather warm to touch but the temp is stable and will not burn your finger. Many examples has pass>30years and still going stronger!

Question 1: How to Check Laser diode with your naked eye !

Answer:You can easily check if the laser does not work, CDP models with drawer, you will see a small red dot on the lens ‘surface after the tray is closed. Check for it in a dark room. Never watch from the top, always from the sides. For top loaders, you´ll have to bridge the contact normally bridged by the lid. The red dot lasts for about 5 seconds, this is the time when the player checks if a new CD was inserted. You can also use your smartphone´s camera, it displays the full ultraviolet spectrum. If the dot is not there or faint, the diode is very likely a dead device 

Question 2: CDM-0/1 mechanism has difficulties in playing a black Chinese CDs/Burnt CDs. Could it be adjusted somehow?

Answer: The CDM-1 should play CD-R / CD-RW without problems. however. It doesn't make sense to increase the laser power because the optical laser power is regulated, adjusting may shift the power band either to new low or worst high floor(baseline).Do NOT attempt to adjust anything !!!

The problem is more likely to be with the Aged Philips capacitors on the attached boards(Look under the laser unit and you will see the "notorius" 3x33uf blue Philips axial capacitors. Replace them with new good quility and you are good to go).

They are known to give problems. Replace with new caps of the same ( or similar ) values.

If your CD-Rs are easily read by other modern CD-Players, I would suggest to - clean the lens &  check the laser focus by adjusting the Motor Spindle height mm so that the CD will be not too close to the optical pick up must be fine-tuned sui sui one! If need help call a sifu!

(mechanical worn due the spindle height variation -magnetic cap worn out  is also a common reason the CDM1 becomes picky with discs but can be fixed easily -need Allen key & Digital meter!).

You must always remember hard the facts in your tiny brain- it is very, very rare for those Philips optical units to fail, Height setting of the CD turntable check would be next best thing to consider!

 When well aligned, CDM-1 will read most of CD-Rs, apart from some rare brands and reflection surface colors (strangely, it reads black CD-Rs better than some aqua color types). It will, however, be an exception, not a rule, that it can read rewritable. A well aligned CDM-1, I mean three adjustments: laser current, spindle height adjustment and radial motor offset(need a scope). But you can also set it accurately even without one. Move the trim pot to the middle position and then turn it either way while a CD is playing and adjust it for the transport to be "happy" i.e. for silent radial motor operation.

Modern Players mostly supplied with these cheap plastic Optic mechanism Bunch of them in today market.

Go back to Basic. Dig the soul out from music!

Meridian MCD Pro is a soup up version of Meridian MCD. A lot thicker, Meaty Professional series for broadcast application.MCD Pro sounds like the business it is reckoned to be the pinnacle of their CDP development! It lets you forget about the equipment and concentrate on the disc you're playing, Needless to say, I'm impressed, If you ever get the opportunity to try out and are prepared to spend on 1540 Dac based players, you really need to be short listing the Pro I can live without any 1541s disc runner but not this One.

Philips CD104 (The singing stone).

Hello everyone, thank you for taking a look at one of our many collection. This listing is for a Philipsee CD-104 late batches of a CD Player. The player is from a serious HIFi(Audiophile series)company based in belguim.They really don't build them like this any more,it was highyy recommended in one of the leading hotest Hi-Fi magazines of the time.It sounds fantastic and believe me that is a understatement!
the CD104 is a simple Disc runner , but it's no simpleton. Without the modern ever-increasing complex features that only few of us could conceive. CD104 is specifically designed to appeal to someone looking for quality, simplicity, egomaniacally reliability, ergonomic,comprehensive functionality & without the finiancial complexities-A Quality player that matches the pricetag.This is luxury runner in the extreme.The existance of CD104 is built to sound good and to last ,it never defies the CD960 or CD94 in anyway but in the different musicality flavour,much of it is VINTAGE and will never be made again. Just be looking for a very strong,very well built disc runner, pocket freindly and usabale against time in which case it could be just the job for us. The Build quality, for instance,the heavenly partnership between CDM1 and the TDA1540p is impeccable!!Soundwise it's dripping with appeal to many Analogue Buff! Neither both the harshness or grit to the sound exist,accurate tracking without missing a beat and with a stunning sound to match its exemplary build quality. Certainly the CD104 makes the very best of pure Disc runner`s potential.A true precious mana for lucky masochists and vintage stone collectors.., and it's a shame for someone not to have the use and pleasure of it.
Apologies for the not showing the acual item photograph; not one of my strong points but more than happy for anybody to pop around for a listen.I will spin as many CDs as i thought reasonable to show it better. Condition - Full working order, but obviously reasonable after such 30 years! There are some scratches, but not deep into the metal skin, the paint still intact but would only be visible at certain angle and lights reflection.I would give this between 9 and 9.5 out of 10 for the sake of reflect.Although a little used and dated, this is still a great performer.The CD104 gave rise to comparisons to any modern CD players of similar price for more!.This player can be upgraded to better the lot and has the potential for upgrading to THE VERY BEST at any price.!Seriously a Heavy CD runner!

Naim Nap160 Power Amp

Most people in their group (50) will probably have come across a Naim of some sort at one point or another in the last 30 years or so. In my case, my first Naim memory was these Nac112,Nap150& FlastCap 2, a highly regarded entry budget of the early 2000s.Their amps sales was dominated by the famous Naim traits. They made a few decent product, but broadly speaking the glory days was when Bumper Chrome series hit the town. So move on to 2010 and there's me, sat at home listening to my stereo and wondering what's going on with the sound; too sharp, too bright, too attack, then after some costly serious prowling to search for the sounds I wish to get from my listening flat so I  ended it up with Chrome Bumpers and it was a definite choice in sound and in cost at least even until today!

The Nap160 is a WONDERFUL power amplifier, this amp is a TANK. It is dynamic, involving, yet very smooth and easy to listen to, robust, full bodied and never fatiguing. It has the same drive as Klouts but running a lot more cooler, when running on the same briks ,i can toasts my bread on top of klout`s casing.

The bass response[Bumper Chrome treats] is absolutely rock solid and tuneful and the PRAT is out of this world, and it never seems to run out of steam, even at high volumes and at very complex , dynamic passage to a very demanding speakers. It is just does it right and is fun to listen to,No compression No astronomically pricey, i believe most people will love these qualities.

To be honest, I was sceptical that there would be such a [snow & rainy]  difference between amps of this quality, but I was shocked at the difference comparing to klout. I would whole-heartedly recommend this component to anyone looking for an power amp in the rm 5000 range.

Nap160 power amps often gets overlooked for its unique small power rating[50w]  and the Dins connection ,they seems to be a turn-off for some people but my recommendation is to trust your ears and you will be duly rewarded. The music it makes is detailed ,engaging and ability to "warm" your bed. Many audiophiles prefer the Naims over other hifi companies in terms of sheer musicality

Meridian MCD player -(MacGyver CD Player)

Meridian [美人甜] MCD is a tiny commando that may looked plain but has the ability to sank a much more bigger ship whenever it comes by.. Meridian MCD were in production from the early eighty is a terrific CD player and i believe to be the one of the finest ancient player ever made. From what i recall there were only few pieces in Johor and the price was equivalent to a Honda cub cc70/vespa scooter today. MCD is a top-loader and therefore not entirely suited to stacking.

The CD100 is extremely musical and built like a tank with massive heat sinks along back sides, it is hot and it can cook eggs.
It all started with world first CD player [CD100] ,a posterior update (CD101) took it up further its last incarnation, The experts in the company [Meridian] wanted something more on the performances so they started to do "moki" business based on CD101 units and these unit were marketed  as MCD & MCD Pro.

The Meridian not just a disc runner but a beast in its own right,and offers good musical involvement. ..

MERIDIAN CD 207 Professional

Meridian has made big changes since 1985 from its MCD footprint.Meridian compact disc player 207Pro 1989 vintage. I bought it from the direct owner he convinced me that this was a fairly fanstastic musical instrument, worth for every rinngit & sen investment and I must admit he was correct and I've enjoyed every moment of my ownership.
Meridian 207 Pro convinced me that this was a musical investment and I must admit it was correct and I've enjoyed every moment of my ownership.Sounds sublime and looks fab,it's a wonderful piece of CD player and ideal for the collector of what is now vintage hi-fi.
It's a wonderful CD player and ideal for the collector. You just have to plonk a CD into it and it still surely works as the designer intended. I've been very careful with handling the player and have only ever used a soft brush, hence all the letters on the front panel are still intact. Anyone of these ancient players [ Arcamee & Marantzee,Meridianee,Quadeee,philipsee & Naimee] need no introduction and all I can say, all you read about them so far is correct.Meridian CD207 is a superb sounding machine, the DAC section with the Philips TDA1541A chip set, makes the player sound far more sophisticated than the original price tag ever suggested.It's special, the 270 may be luxury, but it's stylish,more musicality,smoothness and a near analogue presention(hugely capable).
I would have loved to say, these are appreciating Klassic. The phenomenal CDMx mechanism and Phenomenlist TDA1541A DAC chips fused in a simply beautiful package. As a player they are individually exceptional, with not a hint of digital harshness or grain. Very good condition, reads all discs first time every time and plays without missing a beat.

Cosmetically some odd dot from usage, but nothing noticeable 此机产量不大! 高级精品机种,罕有,非常靓音 值得收藏!

The classic partnership from the old camp. Well, there's two schoolmate in a team, the CDM-x(transporter) and there's TDA1541 (soul maker) gene. Music lovers are really excited to have all them in their listening room. My sense is that they're very enthusiastic about musik businesses.

This CD207 Pro seems to do exactly, what an audiophile professional CD player is supposed to do,It amplifies and delivers exactly the audio quality to the power amp, it does not add, nor does it cover up anything.

Marantzie CD94

Listening to modern ultra high sampling sources can be very daunting for many highly classified sensitive ears, but it is this exact environment players featured with both vintage components (TDA1541/CDMxx) have performed very well especially in the warmth, emotion criterion. A Mulitibit processor has always integrated very well into the golden-ear community and has had several great achievements since several past decades. It’s a remarkable experience to have Philipsee based processor and 007 CDM1 sniper on board to cover up the front line...is something that's quite remarkable sensation for Marantzi CD94 to poise and to face many sort of stiff challenges and still survived like one. Well, there's two players in a team, the CDM-1(transporter) and there's TDA1541 (soul maker) gene. Music lovers are really excited to have all them on the team. My sense is that they're very enthusiastic about musik making. They're well engaged the communication seems to be very positive in terms of collaborative spirit, working together to delivery shiok shiok results.
I've been probably most excited about the way the connection of these 2 great players conduct the performance, these playmates are really coming together. But generally speaking, the goddess integration of CDM+TDA fused very very, very well. This processor is quite different although it's built on semiconductor technology, just like our IPod devices, the TDA processor gives very different results. What you will get is an involving experiences, emotionally, comprehensiveness, fine capture of a momentary expression. And people seems prefer to this type of processing capability of preserving the bold emotional essence! Even playing as a transport business, they are unsurpassed but some still prefers to the most desirable ironic CDM1 as their private Transporter. Marantz CD94 it plays any CD I plonked at it and has never skipped a beat and that is why it is still here. I've always been amazed at the amount of low skill Tech's who don't know any real symptom before condemning to lasers. Is it better than junking the lovely cage for the sake of a sicken component?

The hammer that we have is TDA1541,the nail is CDM1, and the Wood is CDs. With the right hammer and nails, there are no wood that the nails can’t stick!

This CD94 worth every sen  and for the money asked a much better choice than the modern SACD players. I believe CD94 will put many expensive modern players to a big shame and pack up[Tao-pao] 打包 退出江湖!
